How a Piece of Land in Mexico Changed Everything

When we first arrived in San Miguel de Allende for my birthday week almost four years ago, I had a feeling something significant was about to happen.

I had already fallen in love with San Miguel on a previous girls trip and could not stop talking about it afterward. Finally my husband Mike looked at me and said, “You literally won't shut up about this place, so let's just go for your birthday.”

He's hilarious. Thankfully, he agreed.

Like we always do when we travel, we started looking at real estate. At the time I was already working in real estate in Dallas, and this trip felt different from the beginning. More serious. More loaded with possibility.

We toured homes in Centro and admired all the things people naturally fall in love with when they start exploring life in San Miguel de Allende. The architecture. The history. The rooftop restaurants. The energy.

But quietly, in the background, we had also been stalking a completely different type of property online.

A fully off-grid solar ranchito in the campo.

Even writing that now makes me laugh a little because we were big city people. London. Chicago. New York. Dallas. Buying rural land in Mexico was not exactly part of the original life plan.

And yet somehow, the moment we stepped foot onto that property, we both knew.

The mountains stretched endlessly around us. The desert landscape felt grounding and ancient. The stars looked unreal at night. Despite every logical reason this property “shouldn't” have made sense for us, it immediately felt like home.

At the time, we had just spent the entire Covid lockdown perfecting our dream home in Kessler Woods in Dallas. We loved that house deeply. But we're also the type of people who always need a project. We joke that if we don't have something creative to build or improve, we get restless.

Little did we know this would become the biggest project of our lives.

And the best one.

Why We Chose Campo Living in San Miguel de Allende

Many people considering moving to San Miguel de Allende assume they want to live in Centro because it's iconic and walkable. And for many people, Centro absolutely is the right fit.

But for us, campo living offered something we didn't even realize we had been craving: space, quiet, nature, and a slower pace of life.

Nearly four years later, I can honestly say living on our land has reshaped our lives in ways we never expected.

We walk our seven acres almost daily. We adopted 14 incredible Mexican street dogs who now completely run the ranchito. We both quit drinking. We sleep better than we ever did in the United States.

Life simply feels different here.

The mornings are slower.
The nights are quieter.
The sky feels bigger.
Everything feels a little less performative.

One of the biggest surprises for us was how freeing it felt to step away from the constant pressure so many of us are taught to chase in the U.S. Bigger homes. More debt. More stuff. More noise.

For the first time in our adult lives, we no longer carry a mortgage, and that alone changed us more than I can explain.

What replaced all of that was something much simpler:

our dogs,
our land,
our projects,
our routines,
and a life that finally felt honest.

Campo Living vs. Centro Living

One of the things I now help clients understand as a real estate advisor is that choosing where to live in San Miguel de Allende is really about lifestyle fit.

Some people thrive in Centro and love being surrounded by restaurants, galleries, and social energy.

Others are drawn to the campo because they want more land, more privacy, more stars, and a deeper connection to nature.

Neither is better. They're simply different ways of living.

For us, the campo ended up becoming exactly what we didn't know we needed.

Not just a property.

An entirely different way of life.
