A Long Love Affair with San Miguel

We sat down with the owners of Barrio Santo 9C to hear their San Miguel story — from a magazine article that started it all, to the mornings on the terrace that made them stay.

How did San Miguel first come into your life?

“It started with a magazine article, of all things. We stumbled across a piece about San Miguel de Allende — we couldn’t have told you much about it at the time — and something about it made us curious enough to book a trip. The moment we arrived, we were hooked. The weather, the atmosphere, the effortless way you connect with people here. There’s a joy in the air in San Miguel that’s hard to explain until you’ve felt it. It does something to you.”

This wasn’t your first home here, was it?

“No — we’d actually owned two homes in San Miguel before Barrio Santo. That tells you something about this city. It has a way of pulling you back. But 9C felt different from the beginning. It represented a new chapter — a transition into a life deliberately chosen, thoughtfully designed, and perfectly sized for where we are now.”

What was it like when you first walked in?

“Airy. Bright. Roomy in exactly the right way — not too much, not too little. And then we stepped out onto the terrace and saw the views, and something just settled. That exhale feeling. You know when a space fits? This was that moment.”

What surprised you most about living here?

“The community, honestly. That’s what we’ll carry with us longest. The condo gives us as much quiet and solitude as we want — and we wanted plenty of that. But just beyond our door, the shared garden spaces create the conditions for something rarer than a good floor plan or a beautiful view. Genuine connection. Neighbors who made the same deliberate choice to be here, who share the same values and the same sense of what a good life looks like.”

What did a typical morning look like?

“Out on the terrace, early. Quiet. Cool air. The city still waking up below us. Birds. The day beginning slowly and entirely on our own terms. That’s what San Miguel gives you — your mornings back.”

What about the practical side of living at Barrio Santo?

“Better than we expected. The location is its own gift — a developing area with City Market, La Comer, and a growing collection of restaurants and hotels right at our doorstep. The convenience of that daily ease is something you don’t fully appreciate until it becomes part of your rhythm.”

And now you’re moving on. What does Barrio Santo 9C mean to you, looking back?

“It gave us exactly what we came looking for. Community. Relaxation. Convenience. And mornings on that terrace that reminded us, every single day, why we stayed as long as we did.”
