You Don’t Have to Be Ready. You Just Have to Feel the Yes.

A conversation with the founder of Hapori Eco Aldea, just outside San Miguel de Allende.

Some places announce themselves loudly. Hapori does not.

It sits quietly in the countryside outside San Miguel de Allende, a community of lots and homes and shared spaces built around a single intention: that life can be slower, more connected, and more real. The founder did not set out to build a real estate development. She set out to build a feeling.

I sat down with her to ask what that actually looks like.

What first called you to San Miguel?

She had moved back to Mexico looking for the right combination: good weather, no earthquakes, close enough to Mexico City. San Miguel checked every practical box. But then something else happened.

“Once we were here, it was a feeling. Life felt slower, more human, more connected.”

Over time that feeling became a question. And the question became Hapori.

“I realized I did not just want to live here. I wanted to create something that reflected that feeling. A space where people could live closer to nature, to each other, and to themselves.”

So what is Hapori, exactly?

“A living ecosystem more than a development. Yes, there are residential lots and homes for sale. But what we are actually creating is a way of life.”

Intentional community. Regenerative land. Shared spaces. Off-grid infrastructure: solar power, biodigestors, rainwater catchment, alongside the practical backup of grid connection and satellite internet. It is sustainable living without the dogma. Real systems, real neighbors, real life.

“It is not just about aesthetics. It is about how a place feels and how it supports the way people want to live.”

“You do not have to have it all figured out. You just have to feel the yes.”

What does she hope someone feels when they arrive for the first time?

She does not hesitate.

“Exhale. Like their nervous system can finally settle. There is space, there is quiet, there is nature. You can let the land hold you. It is calm, but it is also alive.”

If she had to describe life at Hapori in three words?

“Connected. Grounded. Alive.”

She explains each one carefully. Connected to people, to nature, to yourself. Grounded in a slower rhythm. And alive, because when those two things are present, life just feels more real.

And the moment she knew she was building something real?

Not a grand event. Something quieter.

“Watching people arrive a bit guarded and then slowly open up over a few hours. You can feel the shift.”

She pauses.

“A few weeks ago we had a sound healing ceremony at our new community house, Casa Corazon. Witnessing the family coming together, from young children to the abuelos: that stayed in my heart.”

What does a perfect day at Hapori look like?

“Tea or coffee outside in the morning. Hearing birds, feeling the air before the day picks up.”

Midday has a natural flow, she says. People working on their own projects, kids around, crossing paths organically. Nothing forced.

“Evenings are my favorite. Sometimes shared meals, long conversations, that golden light. And then a deep silence at night that you do not really get in town. It is simple, but it is full.”

Who is Hapori actually for?

“People who feel a pull toward something different, even if they cannot fully explain it yet. People who value connection, who care about how they live, who are open to creating community: not perfect at it, but willing.”

She smiles.

“You do not have to have it all figured out. You just have to feel the yes.”

What role does community play in daily life there?

“Community is at the heart of it, but not in a forced or overwhelming way. It is about knowing your neighbors, sharing moments, supporting each other when it is needed, while still having your own space and independence. It is a balance, and we are learning that.”

What will someone gain at Hapori that they cannot find in a traditional neighborhood or city?

“A sense of belonging. And space, internally and externally. Space to breathe, to slow down, to reconnect with what actually matters.”

Is there anything unexpected or magical about life in this area that most people do not know?

“There is a quiet magic in how people gather here. San Miguel attracts people from all over the world, but in a way that still feels intimate. You end up in conversations you did not expect, friendships that form naturally. There is a richness to it that is hard to explain until you are in it.”

And for someone who feels called but is not sure they are ready?

“You do not have to be 100 percent ready. Most people are not. It is more about listening to that small inner yes and being willing to explore it. Big shifts do not happen all at once. They start with a step.”

Hapori now offers residency stays for people who want to experience the lifestyle before committing. A chance to arrive, exhale, and see if the yes is there.

Looking ahead, what is her vision for Hapori?

“To see it come alive with people who truly care about being here. Homes built with intention, shared spaces being used, kids growing up with more freedom, real relationships forming. Not just a place that looks beautiful, but one that feels alive every day.”

And what does she most hope future residents will value?

She answers with a single word.

“Care. Care for the land, for each other, for the kind of life they are choosing to build. That is really the foundation of everything.”

One last thing: anything she would love to share with someone considering Hapori?

“If something in you feels drawn to this, I would trust that. You do not have to rush, but you also do not have to ignore it. Sometimes the places that call us are part of something we are meant to grow into.”

I know Hapori well. Several of my friends live there and at neighboring Aguila Real, so I have seen this community grow and evolve firsthand. I wrote about my first visit to Hapori and what I found there — a place that does not try to convince you of anything. It simply lets you feel it for yourself.

That is usually how the best things work.
