One of my favorite parts of this job is hearing the stories that never make it into an MLS description.
Buyers see square footage, floor plans, and finishes. Homeowners remember something entirely different. They remember the first cup of coffee on the terrace, the friends who lingered around the table long after dinner, the sunsets they never grew tired of, and the unexpected moments that quietly changed their lives.
Those are the stories that make a house a home.
As someone who helps people buy and sell homes in San Miguel de Allende, I’ve learned that the most meaningful stories almost always begin long before a contract is signed and they continue long after the moving boxes are unpacked.
This is one of those stories.
The first time I saw this house online, one thing immediately caught my attention. It was just down the street from my previous home, in a neighborhood I’d already fallen in love with.
To be completely honest, though... it was pretty awful.
The walls were covered in mismatched paint colors and hand-painted flowers that made it feel more like a preschool than a home. The kitchen cabinets were bright red and green, and the bathrooms, even the ceilings, were painted a deep orange. Most people probably would have scrolled right past it.
And yet, beneath all of that, I saw something.
The soaring ceilings. The incredible sense of space. The natural light. I couldn’t quite explain it, but I kept thinking, There’s something here.
I watched the listing sit on the market for quite a while before finally deciding, “What the heck? I’ll go see it just to rule it out.”
The moment I walked through the front door, everything changed.

Standing beneath the 20-foot ceilings, looking up the staircase, and watching the light move through the rooms, I could immediately picture what this home could become. As an artist, and someone who had already renovated four homes over the previous twelve years, I knew I could transform it into something special.
Over the next several years, that’s exactly what I did.
One of the things I came to love most about living here was the balance. Mornings began with coffee in the great room as sunlight poured through the front entry. Birds filled the courtyard with song, and every now and then I’d hear horses or goats grazing on the land behind the neighborhood, a quiet reminder that although you’re just minutes from the heart of San Miguel de Allende, nature is still part of everyday life.
One of my favorite rituals became walking up to the rooftop terrace and looking toward the cross on the hill in the distance. Some evenings we’d walk up there ourselves to watch the sun disappear over San Miguel. It’s a view I’ll never forget.

Home has always been my favorite place to be.
We cooked almost every night, and this kitchen became the heart of so many wonderful evenings. It’s spacious, beautifully designed, and incredibly practical. Every drawer, every cabinet, and every workspace ended up exactly where I wanted it. Of everything I’ll miss, the kitchen may top the list.

We also loved entertaining.
Friends naturally gathered around the oversized island while dinner came together. Conversations flowed easily, glasses were refilled, and before long everyone found their way to the dining table, where meals often stretched into hours of laughter and sobremesa, that beautiful Mexican tradition of lingering around the table simply because no one is ready for the evening to end.
