Why We Chose to Live Off-Grid in San Miguel

When my husband and I made the decision to move to San Miguel de Allende, we weren't just looking for a new address. We were looking for a more meaningful way of life, one that felt connected, intentional, and resilient. What we found was all of that, and a home that runs almost entirely off the grid.

Let me be clear: off-grid living in San Miguel doesn't mean sacrificing comfort. We have fast fiber-optic internet, hot showers every morning, a fully equipped kitchen, and a home that feels as stylish as anything I've lived in across London, New York, or Chicago. What we've eliminated is the dependence on unreliable infrastructure, replaced with something far more satisfying: self-reliance.

What Off-Grid Living Actually Means

Our home runs on solar panels, is supplied by a rainwater catchment system, and was designed from the ground up to minimize waste while maximizing the natural resources this region has in abundance: sunshine, clean air, and a dry climate that makes water collection surprisingly effective.

The result is freedom. Freedom from unpredictable utility bills. Freedom from grid outages. Freedom from the guilt of a large environmental footprint. And a deep, daily connection to the rhythms of where we live.

Why Sustainability Matters Now

Climate change, population growth, and aging infrastructure aren't abstract concerns here. They're present realities that make sustainable living not just admirable, but practical. And I'm not alone in thinking this. More and more buyers I work with are specifically seeking eco-friendly properties, or asking how they can incorporate sustainable features into the homes they buy.

San Miguel is uniquely positioned for this. The climate is ideal for solar. The culture values craft and intentionality. And the architecture (adobe walls, natural stone, thick thermal mass) was sustainable long before the word became fashionable.

Three Upgrades Worth Considering

Whether you're buying a home here or building from scratch, these are the three sustainable upgrades I recommend most often:

“Ecological consciousness doesn't have to mean aesthetic compromise. Some of the most beautiful homes I've shown are also the most sustainable.”

Solar Power. San Miguel gets over 300 days of sunshine a year. A well-designed solar system with battery backup can take you almost entirely off the grid and dramatically reduce your monthly costs. The upfront investment pays for itself faster than most people expect.

Rainwater Catchment. Water is precious in this high-desert climate. A properly designed catchment system can supply a household with water for drinking, gardening, and general use, and gives you security when municipal supply is interrupted.

Passive Design. Adobe walls, strategic window placement, and natural materials do the work of air conditioning and heating in ways that feel effortless. This is wisdom embedded in Mexican architecture for centuries, and it works.

What It's Done for Us

Living off-grid has made us more aware, more grateful, and more rooted in this place we chose. It's also made us better advisors. When clients ask about sustainable properties, and more and more do, I can speak from experience, not just research.

If you're dreaming of life in San Miguel and wondering whether you can build something that reflects both your lifestyle and your values, the answer is yes. I'd love to help you figure out how.
